Joyce Corinne Bettag, 90, of Oakwood, passed away at 12:32pm, Thursday, August 13, 2015, at Presence USMC, Danville. She was born in New Hartford, Iowa, on June 22, 1925, the daughter of Vern & Hazel Speakman. She moved to Danville in 1941. She married John Bettag Jr. on March 30, 1946, they were divorced and he later died in February of 2008. She is survived by: her 6 daughters, Judy (John) Saeger, Barbara (Gene) Woodard, Carol (Allen) Denney, Nancy (Fred) Keehner, Tracey Wangler, & Cristine (Ben) Prince; her several grandchildren & great grandchildren; her niece, Leslie Hazelett of Kansas; her nephews, Steve Speakman & David Speakman, both of Kansas; and her two much-loved cats, Amber & Elliott. She had treasured friends in Terry Hume, Jeri & Scott Davis, Kathy & Kenny Divan. She also had a wonderful friend, Betty Tapscott, and considered Betty's children to be like her own. She was preceded in death by: her parents; and her brother, Don Speakman. While in Danville, Corinne worked as a bookkeeper for the Dixie and Skyway Drive-Ins and also at Walgreens Accounting. She moved to Oakwood in 1971 and served as Lieutenant on the Fire Department for 15 years from 1970-1990. She was an EMT for the Rescue Squad for 10 years. She also held Village Clerk for two terms and Village Trustee for two terms. She worked for JoAnn Fabrics for many years as a manager. She worked in the deli at the Oakwood Store. For 19 years, Corinne also worked at Danville Tile as bookkeeper from 1982 until she retired in 2007. Corinne loved living in Oakwood and in her spare time, she enjoyed knitting, sewing, & reading. She loved the many cats she had over the years and donated to the North Shore Animal League. She attended the United Methodist Church in Oakwood and donated to them. Corinne always said, "God intended flowers to be grown in the ground and not cut in a vase." With those words, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to her favorite charities that she donated to: The United Methodist Church Oakwood or The Vermilion County Animal Shelter. A celebration of Corinne's life will be held at 3:00pm, Monday, August 18, 2015, at Sunset's Oakwood Chapel, with Pastor Terry Shane officiating. Visitation will be 1:00pm-3:00pm Monday prior to her service at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.
