Joseph M. Stroud, 82 of Danville, passed away at 6:30am, Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana due to a brain injury from falling down a flight of stairs. He was born August 28, 1929, in Owensboro, KY, the son of Elmo Chester "Jack" and Ruth (Edge) Stroud. On November 29, 1950, he was united in marriage to Joyce (Ballard) Stroud. His is survived by his wife Joyce, his daughters, Renee Stroud of Elkton, Virginia, and Joey Kelson, Michele LaFave, Jadoun (Larry) Curtis, and his son, Jeff (Lori) Stroud, all of Danville; his grandchildren, Jason (Tammy) Kelson of Ridge Farm, Russel (Monica) Kelson of Sandefjord, Norway, Hunter LaFave of Austin, Texas, Drew Curtis of Pensacola, Florida, and Nola Stroud of Danville; his great-grandchildren, Tyler, Corbin, Shelby, Helen, Natalie, Brett, Mason, and one brother, Tome (JoLane) Stroud of Owensboro, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Elmo Stroud. Joe graduated from St. Francis Academy and Brescia University in Owensboro, KY. He served in the U.S Air Force from 1948 through 1952, including four months in Korea where he flew 25 missions in a B-29 bomber. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Danville. He and his wife, Joyce, were owners of Stroud Liquors for 22 years and Stroud Accounting, where Joe was an accountant for fifty years. He had a special affection for his loyal income tax clients and their children and grandchildren throughout the years. Joe served as Danville Finance Commissioner for four years. He was instrumental in bringing the Civic Center to Danville. A member of the Danville VFW, American Legion Post #210, Korean War Veterans, and has been on the board for the Humane Society for 25 years. He loved to be surrounded by his family and working in the yard. He enjoyed watching old movies, smoking cigars and babysitting his granddaughter, Nola. A Catholic Mass for Joseph M. Stroud is scheduled for 11:00am Saturday, August 25, 2012 at St. Paul's Catholic Church located at 1303 North Walnut Street in Danville with Father Greg Nelson officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 4-7pm on Friday, August 24, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home, located at 3940 N. Vermilion Street in Danville with a 3:30pm prayer service Friday at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by the Danville American Legion Post 210. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Paul's Church and the Danville Humane Society.
