Joseph 'Joe' Reed

Joseph Lawrence Reed, born February 26, 1927, the son of Frank and Esther Alley Reed, went to meet his Lord and Savior on December 13, 2009, leaving this world a better place for having been a part of it. Surviving him is his wife, Susan T. Baum-Reed, whom he married in 1997. Two stepsons, Mark (LaVonne) Baum of Indianapolis, IN, and Matthew (Michelle) Baum of Finnville, MI. Five step grandchildren, Dylan, Heather and Andrew Baum of Indianapolis, and Bode and Michiele Baum of Finnville, MI. Three sisters, Dorothy (Bob) Ellis of Rossville, Margaret (Pete) Gernand of Potomac, and Marilyn (Bill) Boen of Oakwood. Four brothers, Frank (Sharon) Reed of Normal, IL, Harold (Sue) Reed of Homer, Ralph (Diana) Reed of Danville, and Kenneth (Donnell) Reed of Texas. Several nieces, nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews also survive Joe. His parents, one brother, Albert Reed, and his stepmother, Roselind Reed precedes Joe in death. Joe was a very special and unique person. A 1945graduate of Dana High School in Indiana. A star athlete in basketball, baseball, and track. A United States Army veteran during the Korean Conflict and an active member of the Middle Fork VMC in Potomac. He served in the Peace Corp in Ethiopia, from 1972-1975, teaching agriculture. Joe was part owner of the Reed-Hulse John Deer Implement Dealership in Hoopeston, IL, from 1959-1969. An active member of the American Legion Post 428 in Potomac. A member of the Boneyard Creek Cloggers of Champaign for several years, as well as a member of the square dancing group out of Terre Haute, IN. Joe traveled not only to Africa, but also to the Great Pyramids of Egypt and walked the steps of Jesus in the Holy Land. He had a passion for farming the land for many years and loved being a productive, giving person. He loved to read for the knowledge, and enjoyed bowling, ping-pong, playing euchre, (the Reed familys favorite pastime), playing the accordion, gardening, and walking beans. Joe will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. A Celebration of Joe Reeds Life will began at 10:00am on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center located at 3940 N. Vermilion St. in Danville with Pastor Jerry Hickman officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7pm on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at the funeral home.
