Joseph M. Joe McCormick, 90, of Olathe, Kansas, formerly of Danville, IL, passed away Friday evening, October 2, 2009 at the Santa Marta Nursing Home in Olathe, KS. Mr. McCormick was born on June 25, 1919, in New Haven, Conn., the son of Mr. Joseph M. McCormick Sr. and Mrs. Jane G. (McGuire) McCormick. On October 17, 1953, Joe married Ms. Eileen E. ONeill in New Haven, Conn. She preceded him in death in 2002. Surviving family include three nephews, and two nieces, Mr. John F. ONeill (wife Jane) of Leawood, KS, Mrs. Eileen (husband Peter Casey) ONeill of New Haven, Conn., Mr. Robert (wife Carol) ONeill of Monroe New York, Mrs. Elizabeth (husband Richard) Getz of W. Hartford, Conn, and Mr. Jerry (wife Virginia) ONeill of Cheshire, Conn. His parents, and brother, Steve McCormick, precede Joe in death. Joe served in the United States Army during WWII, finishing at the rank of Sergeant Major. His accomplishments and awards include a certificate from the French Council from the Government of France for his contribution in the fight to liberate France from the Axis Powers during WWII. A Certificate of Recognition from Illinois House of Representative, Bill Black, in Honoring Joe for his services in war-torn France during WWII, as well as many others. Joe studied at Dartmouth College, and at Harvard University, graduating from the School of Business Administration. His Business Administration Degree took him to Uniroyal Chemical Company, working as an Industrial Engineer in Naugatuck, Conn. Joe was a member of St. Pauls Catholic Church in Danville, Danville Elks Lodge #332, and Danville Tennis Club. He also was a member of the service Corps Retired Executives (SCORE) of Danville, Dartmouth Club of Chicago, IL, Harvard Business School Club of Chicago, life member-Dartmouth club of South Conn., and life member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. Joe celebrated 19 years in 2004, as a volunteer tutor for the Adult Literacy Program, and as an Enrollment Counselor at the Danville Area Community College. For the last year, Joe was well cared for at Santa Marta. He was extremely thankful for the wonderful staff in the skilled nursing wing, who all knew him as Uncle Joe. His family joins him in thanking these caregivers for the comfort they provided him. A Funeral Mass and Celebration for Joseph McCormick will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 10:00am at St. Pauls Catholic Church located at 1303 N. Walnut St. in Danville with burial to take place at the St. Lawrence Cemetery in W. Haven Conn. at a later date. Visitation will be from 4-7pm on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center located at 3940 N.
