Joseph Barney Jr., 74, of Georgetown lost his battle with Alzheimer's at 2:05 PM, Saturday October 8, 2011 at Provena United Samaritans Hospital in Danville. Joseph was born on May 20, 1937 to Joseph and Nina Mae (Hanson) Barney Sr. in Danville. He married Wanda Johnson on November 8, 1958 at the 1st Church of Christ in Westville. She survives. He is survived by two sons- William (Balinda) Barney of Fort Branch IN, Jeffery (Darla) Barney of Georgetown, two daughters- Kathryn (Gary) Jackson of Ridgefarm, Susan (Michael) Scott of Georgetown, two brothers- Terry (Carol) Barney of Westville and Owen (Amy) Barney of Westville, nine grandchildren- Tabitha (Jason) Starns of St. Joesph, Sara (Jeromy) Spesard of Ridgefarm, Lacy (Jeremy) Leeman of Georgetown, Matthew (Sonce) Scott of Georgetown, Randy Scott, Kristen Glidewell, and Cory Tintorri all of Georgetown, Jade and Lance Barney of Fort Branch IN, thirteen great-grandchildren- MaCaulen, Tanner, Layten and Joseph Starns; Cierra Peplow, Mercedes Glidewell, Cali Waggoner, Ashlyn and Madilyn Spesard, Calen Leeman; Lucas, Daniel, and Margaret Scott, several cousins, nieces and nephews and two couples that held a special place in Joseph's heart, Bob and Irene "Jellybean" Baity and Juanita and the late Russell Harrison. He was preceded in death by his parents, one nephew- Thomas Wayne Barney and one niece- Tammy Lee (Barney) Wood. Joseph graduated from Georgetown High in 1956 where he was voted friendliest in his class. He started working at the VA in Danville as a nurses aid then became an electrician for the VA after being mentored by Dwight Black of Westville, he served there for 35 years, retiring in July of 1993. After retirement he worked at ERH enterprises for 13 years. Joseph enjoyed hunting, traveling, joking, spending time with family and friends and he always made time to take his kids on vacation every year. He served as secretary and president of the AFGE Local #1963 for several years and was Past Alderman of Ward 4 of Georgetown. Joe was also an instrumental part in getting the new water system installed in Georgetown. He was also a member of the United States Navy. A Celebration of Joseph's Life will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday October 12, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville with Pastor John Mincy officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Joseph's name to the American Alzheimer's Foundation and Pleasant Meadows Christian Village.
