John Zarn

John Julius Zarn, 74, passed away at 12:35 a.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2007 at his residence in Danville, Illinois. John was born May 29, 1933, a son to Julius J. and Trina (DenBraven) Zarnowski. He later married Yuriko Toyoda in Okinawa, Japan. He is survived by two sons, James J. (Abbie) Zarn of Danville and Joseph J. (Diana) Zarn of Covington, IN, two daughters Lillian (George) Rutan of Bismarck and Diane (Rich) Lazzell of Danville, two sisters Fran (Ron) Etchison and Lois (Dan) Smith, and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one sister, Wanda Pierce. After he graduated High School John decided to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corp where he fought in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served for 20 years, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. John truly was all Marine, all the time. After his discharge he became commandant of the Marine Corp League, visited veterans at the VA hospital, volunteered his time at the War Museum, put out Memorial Day flags in cemeteries, and was an editor of Devil Dog Monthly newsletter. Aside from this he catered food to Schlarman Hilltopper events and contributed greatly to Toys for Tots. John also enjoyed family gatherings, the San Francisco Giants, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears. A celebration of Johns life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 29, 2007 at Sunsets Community and Life Tribute Center (formerly Lakeside-Barrick) located at 3550 N. Vermilion St. in Danville. A visitation will also be held the evening before on Sunday, October 28, 2007 from 4-7 p.m., also at Sunsets Community and Life Tribute Center.
