John Woodrow

John N. Woodrow, 93, of Covington, passed away at 11:30 p.m. on July 12, 2018. John was born in Cates, IN, the son of Dewey Floyd and Edith Violet (McElwee) Woodrow on June 8, 1925. He married Judith Ann Jones on July 28, 1946. They spent 59 years together before her passing on January 15, 2005. He will be missed by his children, Debby Jeffries of Covington, Dan (Joan) Woodrow of Lafayette, and Donna (Dave) Sobottka of Waxahachie, TX. Besides his three children, he is survived by 7 grandchildren, Dustin Wilson, Sally Moore, Kevin Jeffries, Jennifer Peters, Jackie Jansing, Amanda Graupner, and Chad Mosson. He also has 14 great grandchildren, Lucas, Ethan, and Annabelle Peters; Samantha, Olivia and Drew Jansing; Ava Graupner; Cole Mosson; Corinne, Conlan and Cian Moore; Caroline, Madeline, and Maxwell Wilson. John was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, his parents, and two brothers, Floyd and Donald, and a very special grandson, Jamie Serpinas. John graduated Kingman, IN high school in 1942. During the war, he spent a few years in Hammond, IN, making 5 inch Navy shells. While in Hammond, he also worked for Wonder Bread, wrapping freshly baked bread. He drove a concrete truck and worked for Rinso Soap. After the war he returned to Cates, IN to work with his father in the family business as a carpenter. John and his family built 37 houses in Covington as well as some in outlying areas. He also built the Masonic Lodge and DJ's Drive-In Restaurant. He also worked at the Covington Lumber Yard. He was very proud of being one of the founders of the Little League program in Covington, which remains active to this day. He coached little league teams for 20 years as well as managing an independent team. He was on the safety patrol for 20 years at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. One of his favorite memories was being able to drive around the speedway for one lap with his son, Dan, after a mayor's breakfast. He served on the Covington fire department, police force, city council and was a trustee and secretary of the K.P. Lodge. John enjoyed spending time with his family and watching all his grandchildren and great grandchildren's activities. He was an avid Yankee, Cubs, and Colts fan. He loved any movie with John Wayne in it. He is going to be missed by his family very much. Services will be held at Covington's Sunset Chapel on Wednesday, July 18, 2018. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. Ryan Sowers will conduct the service. He will be laid to rest beside his wife in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Judith A. Woodrow Memorial Scholarship with the Covington Community Foundation.
