John William Shaffer

John William Shaffer, 79, of Danville passed away on March 29, 2016 at 11:45 AM at Danville VA Iliana Healthcare System. He was born on October 28, 1936 in Georgetown, IL, the son of Roy and Dollie (Wilson) Shaffer. He married Peggy L. Williams and she preceded him in death in 1998. John will be deeply missed by his son, John William Shaffer Jr., daughter, Mary Castleberry, grandchildren; Amanda Castleberry, Heather Trexler, Courtney Harmon and Matthew Shaffer, great grandchildren; Jason Duprey, Alyssa Trexler, Eryn Brown, Riley Trexler, Kayla Trexler, Skyler Harmon and Emily Castleberry. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister, Dolores Henderson. John attended Schlarman Academy before joining the United States Navy. He traveled all over the world in his 20 years of service. After John retired from the Navy he returned home to work for the Danville Sanitary District and drove a school bus for District #118. He liked to bartend in his spare time as well as travel and ride his scooter. He was a member of the Covington, IN, VFW. A celebration of John's life will be held on April 4, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville with Fr. Hippolyytus Njoku officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2016 from 3:00-5:00 PM at the funeral home. John will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park.
