John W. Sullivan

John W. Sullivan, age 95, died on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 in the OSF hospital in Danville, Illinois. From his birth in Danville on May 21, 1923 to his death he nourished the people around him with love, faith and humor. John was the oldest son of 5 children born to Aaron and Ethel (Veirs) Sullivan and served in the US Navy from 1942-1945 on a PT boat. As Gunner's Mate 3rd Class, he was assigned to PT-107 based in the Solomon Islands. He was never sick, never missed a patrol, and was in action the night JFK's PT-109 was destroyed. This experience as "the Kid" on a small boat in a wide world shaped his whole life. He married Doris Mae Gouty after the war and they had three children. Working as a boilermaker on the C&EI Railroad first and the Southern Pacific after he moved his family to California in 1965. They lived there happily for twenty years, moving back to Danville with Doris for their retirement. She passed away in 2015 and he's been looking forward to joining her ever since. John was an avid gardener and loved to share his produce and stories with his many friends, neighbors and relatives. He always had a joke ready and was interested in hearing everyone's stories and ideas. He's survived by his three children, Nancy Sullivan, Jim Sullivan and Gail O'Sullivan His children would like to extend our gratitude to all the family that have been so helpful in caring for John. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John's name to your local Veterans group. A celebration of John's life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion, Danville. Visitation will be held from 1:30pm t0 2:00pm prior to the service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery.
