John W. Scott

John W. Scott Jr., 87, of Georgetown, passed away at 8:20pm, Sunday, April 6, 2014, Wyndcrest Assisted Living, Rochester, IL. He was born on March 3, 1927, in Danville, IL, the son of John W. Sr. and Ruth {Holden} Scott, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Norma Sheppard on October 5, 1946, in Georgetown until her passing on October 20, 2012. Those who will miss him include: his daughter, Jennifer (Clarence) Worley of Dawson, IL; his granddaughter, Andrea (Dane) Shaffer of Springfield, IL; his great grandchildren, Austin & Lillian Shaffer of Springfield; his brother-in-law, Burley Penninger of Georgetown; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Mitchell. John was a proud US Veteran serving his country for 22 years. Before retiring from the US Air Force, he served in WWII, Korean War, & lastly, in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. After retiring from military service, he worked for AMAX Coal Company then retiring in 1983. He was a member of the First Church of Christ Georgetown, 32nd Degree Mason with lifetime membership at Anchor Lodge #980, as well as, a lifetime member of the United Mine Workers District 12, and was a member of the American Legion Dornblaser Post #203 Georgetown. John enjoyed going golfing, fishing, and camping. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. A Celebration of John's life will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, April 11, 2014, at Sunset's Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home, Georgetown. Visitation will be held 12:30pm-2:00pm, Friday prior to his service at the funeral home with Masonic rites to be done at 12:00pm by the Anchor Lodge #980. He will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Dornblaser Post #203. Memorial donations may be given in John's name to First Church of Christ, Georgetown.
