Danville John "Willie" William Galbreath, 97, of Danville passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. He was born at home in Danville, IL on August 27, 1925, the son of William Harve and Clara (Musson) Galbreath. On March 12, 1943, John married Virginia McJilton in Champaign, IL.
John is survived by his son, John William (Toni) Galbreath, Jr. of Champaign; mother of grandchildren, Barbara Wildman George; grandsons, David (Sandy) Galbreath of Tolono, Douglas Galbreath of Champaign; step-grandchildren, John (Julie) Beatty of Tolono, Sara (Jeff) Riebe of Thawville; great-grandchildren, Jennifer Galbreath (mother, Melinda Branch) of Indianapolis, IN, Matthew and Andrew Galbreath of Champaign (mother, Kim Roy), Adaira and Max Beatty of Tolono, Mason Riebe of Thawville; and a great niece, Julie Brush-Olsen of Pekin, IL.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Virginia and his sister Clara Jane Galbreath.
John attended Catlin Grade and High School. He also attended Commercial Trades Institute on Auto Mechanics. John was a Petty Officer, Coxswain rating in World War II, United States Navy and served 3 years (1943-1946) in the Pacific on Saipan Island. John worked at the Western Brick Co. before entering service. After he was discharged he went to work at Nobles Motor Ford Garage (15 years). John was co-owner of Andy & Johns Auto Service (16 years). He was owner of Johns Wheel Alignment Shop on Brewer Road starting in 1980 and closed up shop at the age of 90 years old.
John was instrumental in the founding of Northland Christian Church, spending many hours in helping build the church. He served on the church board, he was a trustee, he taught Sunday School Classes and served on various committees. John was an avid fast ball pitcher for many years, pitching for Second Church. The team won the Industrial League and went to state tournaments for 2 years.
John enjoyed his work, he loved fishing, reading, traveling, and spending time with his family. His grandsons will always remember the fishing trips to Wisconsin and his words of wisdom in the no wake area.
A visitation for John W. Galbreath will be held from 2-4 PM, Sunday, April 2, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL 61834. Burial will take place at Danville National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, John would like you to take a loved one out to dinner.
