J. T. "Tom" Gulick, 86, of Danville passed away at 9:08am on Wednesday, July 12, 2016, at Carle Hospital, Urbana, IL. He was born on September 3, 1929 in Danville, IL to Joseph W. and Claudine B. (Switzer) Gulick. Tom had one brother Dr. J. L. Gulick He was united in marriage to Loretta F. Maire on September 10, 1953 in Danville, she survives. Tom will be missed by: son, Steve Gulick of Danville; daughter, Sue (Lindy) Edmund of Champaign; five grandchildren, Carlie Edmund of Brentwood, MO and Kyle Edmund of Champaign, Keegan, Kendl, and Kristina Gulick, all of Danville; nephew, Greg Gulick; two nieces, Denise (Gulick) Rieser and Michelle (Gulick) Osborn. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dr. J.L. Gulick. In 1947 Tom graduated from Danville High School and continued his education at the University of Illinois Chicago Campus, graduating in 1951 with his degree in Pharmacy. Tom purchased Woodbury Drug Co. from his grandfather T. A. Gulick in 1953 and eventually relocated that pharmacy from Main St. to North St. In 1971 he bought the former Carson Pharmacy from Ben Carson. He operated two drug stores for several years with two different names and merged the two into one building at 912 N. Vermilion St. in 1978 and changed the name to Gulick Pharmacy. After merging the two stores together, Tom, his wife Loretta, and son Steve formed Illiana Medical Equipment and Supply a home medical equipment business inside the 912 N. Vermilion St. pharmacy. In 1998 he sold the pharmacy part of the business and continued to operate Illiana Medical Equipment and Supply at this location with his son Steve until his death. The original drug store was formed in 1846 and today is still operating as Gulick's Illiana Medical Equipment and Supply at 170 years old. Tom was active and influential in many organizations including: President of the Board of the IMESCO Buying Group, he was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Danville Rotary Club, for 65 years he was a member of the Anchor Lodge No. 980 Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, a former member of Elks Lodge No. 332, and for a time was Chairman of the Board at First Savings Bank. He was a lifelong member of the NRA, the National Skeet Shooting Organization and helped form the Illiana Skeet and Trap Shooting Club in Cayuga, IN. In 1987 he played an integral part in changing the form of government in Danville to its current aldermanic format. As an avid Illini fan he was a long time season ticket holder and member of Illini Rebounders. He supported the University of Illinois and was member of the Presidents Council of the University of Illinois Foundation. You could find Tom either attending or listening to Illini basketball and football games during their seasons. Tom and Loretta enjoyed travelling, including trips to Russia, China, and Europe. Tom was passionate about his career and he was influential in many pharmaceutical organizations. He was the IPHA (Illinois Pharmaceutical Association) President from 1971-1972. In addition, he was a member of the Drug Advisory Committee for the Illinois Department of Public Aid from 1982-1992 that assisted in preparing the state recommendations and data for the National Pharmaceutical Council's "Pharmaceutical Benefits Under the State Medical Assistance Programs". He was active in the APhA (American Pharmaceutical Association) Academies serving as the Chairman of the Practice Management Section from 1982-1983; Chairman of the Home Health Care Section, 1984-1986; and as Chair of the Community and Ambulatory Practice Section of the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management 1992-1993. A Celebration of Tom's life will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center 3940 N. Vermilion St. in Danville.
