John “Jack” Leonard Steinbrenner Jr., age 85, of Newport, Indiana, left his earthly ties surrounded by his loving family on January 28th, 2025, at 6:16 a.m.
Jack was born on November 1, 1939, to John L. Steinbrenner Sr. and Annamae (Hutchens) Steinbrenner in Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1958, he graduated from Gerstmeyer High School. He joined the United States Army Reserves in 1963 and ended duty in 1969. In 1963, he met Sharon K. Myers on a blind date. They married on December 4th, 1965. They soon moved from Terre Haute to Newport, Indiana.
Jack is survived by his wife Sharon Steinbrenner, his sons John H. (Brigit) Steinbrenner of Hillsdale, Jeff (Tammy) Steinbrenner of Newport. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jacob (Michaela) Steinbrenner, Ashton Steinbrenner, Chuck, Patrick and Erik Weaver all of Newport. Great grandchildren Gordon and Gibson Steinbrenner, Jayden and Evalynn Weaver. Sister-in-law Judy Hunsberger of Warsaw, Indiana. Special nieces and nephew, Kitty Ellis, Toni Van Dyke and Joe Hunsberger.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Joann and Bob Loehman, brother Larry Steinbrenner, father and mother-in-law Howard and Dorothy Myers, and brother-in-law Frank Hunsberger.
Jack worked many years as a carpet layer for Leslie’s Carpet Service and for Hercules/AET from 1970-2001. He retired from AET in 2001. He was a proud member of the NRA and the Newport American Legion Post 184. His hobbies included fishing, being a master in woodworking (one-of-a-kind projects), watching Indiana University basketball, New York Yankees baseball, and old western movies. He especially loved attending everything his kids and grandkids were involved in, especially their sports. He was a very proud Dad and Grandpa! Jack left this world with his own personal relationship with God. Jack will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
