John Randall Scott, 61, of Westville passed away on November 13, 2024 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. He was born June 18, 1963 to Joann (Carpenter) and Randy Scott. He attended Westville High School and graduated with the Class of ’81. Immediately after graduation, he embarked upon his apprenticeship with the electrical union. This began a lifelong passion and a 43 year-long career in the trade. He was a member of IBEW Local #538.
Not one to sit still for long, John could usually be found working on a new home project and in earlier years, he was frequently spotted around town walking his Great Dane, Thunder. An avid motorcycle rider, John spent countless hours riding on the open road. He enjoyed all things sports, especially the days he could be decked out in orange and blue to cheer on his favorite team - the Fighting Illini. But it wasn’t just sports and motorcycles that defined John; it was also his willingness and generosity to help others. He constantly sought out new ways to help his family and friends. He was a devoted servant in his faith, as well as a member of the Grape Creek Baptist Church for many years. He looked forward to getting everyone together and would often host gatherings that created plenty of memories that his family and friends will cherish for years to come. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love.
John is survived by his parents Randy (Linda) Scott and Joann (Mike) Schingel; his children John (Ashley) Scott and Tara (Mike) Oxier; and grandchildren Kaiden, Nevaeh, Grayson, Zoey & Carson Scott and Nathan & Hannah Oxier. He also leaves behind his siblings Michael (Susan) Scott, Shanna (Steve) Doggett, Amanda (Theo Gonzalez) Rice, Maggie Rice, Michael (Jennifer) Schingel, and Matt Rice; as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; step-brother Mark Rice; cousins Carrie Gulick and Aymee Johnson-McCay; and uncle Loren Carpenter.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024 from 3-6 pm at Sunset Funeral Home’s Urbas Chapel, located at 414 S. State Street in Westville. A funeral service celebrating his life will take place the following afternoon on Monday, November 18, 2024 at 1:00 pm, also at the Urbas Chapel. Pastor Dave Leary will be officiating. John will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Danville following the service. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Grape Creek Baptist Church.
