John R. Kiger

Tangier, Ind. -- John R. Kiger, 77, of Tangier, passed away at 10:30 p.m. EST Tuesday (February 13, 2007) at St. Clare Medical Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He was born February 20, 1929, in Parke County, Indiana, the son of the late Reid and Kate Grimes Kiger. He married Barbara Ellen Newnum on October 1, 1950 in Tangier, Indiana. She survives. Other survivors include: three sons, Michael Lee(Marsha)Kiger of Danville, Indiana; Daniel Wayne Kiger of Crawfordsville, Indiana and John Glenn(Jackie)Kiger of Covington, Indiana; six grandchildren, Holli Kiger, Heather(Shane)Thacker, Brandon, Bradley, Rachel and John Michael Kiger; one great granddaughter, Mackenzie Thacker; three sisters, Amelia Ann Kiger and Betty Kiger both of Lafayette, Indiana and Louise(Earl)Newnum of Bloomingdale, Indiana; one brother, Bobby Gene(Connie)Kiger of Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diana; three brothers, Glen, Harold and Mikie Dean Kiger and one sister, Martha Black. John was the former owner and operator of the Kiger Shell Station in Kingman, Indiana for 45 years. He worked as a mechanic for the former Fable Ford dealership in Cayuga, Indiana. He was a veteran of the United States Army. John was a 1947 graduate of Tangier High School. He enjoyed caring for and mowing his yard. His hobby was the shell gas station. Funeral services: 2 p.m. EST Sunday, February 18, 2007 at DeVerter Brothers Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Rev. Steve Crum; Burial: Rush Creek Cemetery in Tangier, Indiana; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EST Saturday, February 17, 2007 at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Kingman Fire Department, C/O Allen Brown, P.O. Box 84, Kingman, Indiana 47952-0084.
