John Patrick “JP” Calvin, 76, of Danville, IL passed away at 12:55 PM on August 11, 2025, at the Illiana Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center in Danville, IL.
JP was born on February 12, 1949, the son of Harold and Vivian (Kerr) Calvin in Danville, IL. He married Jody Wallace on September 17, 1977, in Danville, IL, and they had 3 children together. Later, he married LaVerne Armes on June 7, 1997.
Survivors include his wife, LaVerne Calvin of Danville, IL, children, Melinda “Mindy” (Jeremy) Priest of Westville, IL, Joan (Nathan) Applegate of Danville, IL, Justin (Samantha Meeker) Calvin of Danville, IL, Kevin (Susan) Hill of Ft Myers, FL and Larry (Suszanne Ingram) Hill of Bismarck, IL, grandchildren, Zach Hill, Jared (Ashli) Hill, Logan Hill, Clayton (Cierra) Hill, Abigayle (Danny) Neubig, Haley Hill, Keely Applegate, Grace Hill, Jackson Priest(Katelyn Callahan), Madeline Applegate, Noah Warner, Madison Priest, Scarlett Calvin, Marigold Calvin, Violet Calvin, and Vivian Calvin, great grandchildren, Beau Neubig, Harper Hill, Scarlett Hill and Houston Hill, three siblings, Tim Calvin of Champaign, IL, Mark (Sue Bennett) Calvin of Watseka, IL and Joe (Angela) Calvin of Georgetown, KY, as well as his lifelong friend, Jody Calvin of Danville, IL and best buddy Justin Duprey of Danville, IL.
JP is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Tony Calvin, and nephew, Sean Calvin.
In 1966 at the age of 17, JP started singing in Barbershop Quartets and Choruses. He was most recently in a quartet named “Four On The Floor”. He enjoyed singing almost anywhere he went and taught his children a deep appreciation for music. He graduated from Schlarman in 1967. JP proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1968-1978 in Panama, Oklahoma and Charleston, SC as a teletype and crypto maintenance technician and was an E-5 Sergeant when he was honorably discharged. Upon returning to Danville, he was a mechanic at several local businesses and worked for a short time at the VA as a CNA. JP bought his own shop, Bob’s Motor Shop, that he owned and operated until its closing in 2003. He returned to work at the Illiana Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center as a Cook, where he eventually retired. He was a member of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., Danville Barbershop Chorus, the Knights Of Columbus, and the Turtle Club. JP was known to enjoy a cold Bud Light anywhere he could, but he especially loved ones that were drank with friends under the “best shade tree in Vermilion County”.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, August 18, 2025 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N Vermilion St. Danville, IL 61834. Miles Clark will officiate. Burial will be in Danville National Cemetery with Military Rites accorded by American Legion Post 210 Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 2-4:00 PM on Sunday, August 17, 2025 and 9:00-10:30 AM on Monday, August 18, 2025 at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made in JP’s memory to the Activities Fund for Veterans at the Illiana Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Danville, IL.
