John F. Jenkins, 81, a lifelong resident of Danville, passed away on February 14, 2008 at Provena United Samaritan Medical Center in Danville. John was born on May 11, 1926 to Danold Kemper Jenkins and Anna (Sharp) Jenkins-Leisch. John married Helen M. Thiede on August 8, 1948 and was blessed with 59 years of marriage, three children; Judy (Pat) Kushner-Clark of Georgetown, KY; Pat (Larry) Salzburg of Dwight, IL and Dan Jenkins of Madison, WI, also two grandchildren, Andy (Janelle) Buck of Palatine, IL and Stacie Kushner of Georgetown, KY. Upon graduation from Danville High School in 1944, John served honorably in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific aboard the destroyer USS Frank E. Evans during WWII; then during the Korean War in the Mediterranean aboard several ships. John earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. He had a 34 year career with Danville School District #118 serving as High School English teacher and golf coach; Guidance Counselor at East Park Junior High; Director of Guidance for District #118 and Principal of Cannon Grade School where he retired in 1986. He also was an instructor at Danville Area Community College. He was an avid golfer and 60 year member of The American Legion and Elks Club. John is survived by his wife, Helen, two of his children, Judy and Dan and his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his daughter, Pat. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday February 18, 2008 at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion Street, Danville and burial will follow at Walnut Corner Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m., Sunday February 17, 2008. Memorials can be made to The Humane Society, Danville Lutheran Schools, or the charity of the donors choice.
