Danville- John S. "Jack" Ray, 88, of Danville and Clearwater, FL passed away at 6:37 PM on Monday, November 7, 2011 at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville. He was born on June 26, 1923 in Monticello, IL to John S. Ray Sr. and Gertrude Cook Ray. He married Belva Cornett on November 28, 1948 in Danville. She preceded him in death on June 1, 2002. Surviving are three sons, Dr. Scott (Deborah) Ray of Clearwater, FL, Jeffrey Ray, also of Clearwater, and Todd (Cindy) Ray of Dalton, GA; three grandchildren, Alison Finley, Alexandra Ray, and Brandon Blakey; and 3 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. Jack served as a Staff Sergeant in the Squadron A of the 3014th Army Air Force Base Unit during WWII. In addition to being a great patriot, Jack was a life-long New York Yankees fan. He also enjoyed college basketball and most other sports. Jack was a member of the American Legion Post #210 and a faithful member at First Baptist Church in Danville where he was a past deacon, usher, and choir member. A service to celebrate the life of John S. "Jack" Ray will be held at 1 PM on Veteran's Day, Friday, November 11, 2011 at First Baptist Church in Danville. Pastor Jerry Cummins will officiate. Burial will follow at Springhill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 PM on Thursday, November 10 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville.
