John D. Majors

John Donald Majors passed away on July 25, 2024, in a VA hospital near Bonham, Texas. John was born to Bertie Cook Majors and Alice Olive Majors on September 18, 1924, in Fountain County, Indiana. Prior to moving to Texas in 1972, he had lived in Crawfordsville and in Covington, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Betty Ritenour Majors, his daughter, Patricia Majors McGaha, his brothers Charles Wayne and Kenneth. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Shirley Anderson Majors, his children, John A. Majors (Pamela), Mary Majors Weliver (Frank), and Dennis N. Majors (Vicki), and his brother Fred; also, by 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 10 great, great-grandchildren.

Mr. Majors graduated from Newport, IN high school in 1942, and attended one semester at Purdue University before joining the US Coast Guard, serving from 5/19/1943 to 5/11/1946, then in the USCG Reserves until 1952. He was an accomplished carpenter, and greatly enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating nearly his entire life. His primary career was in the insurance business, serving with Western & Southern Life, in Indiana and Texas, retiring in September 1984, as District Manager in Houston, TX, after 25 years of service. He was a faithful husband and father, always loving and providing well for his family.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at Sunset Funeral Homes Covington Chapel, located at 420 3rd Street in Covington, Indiana.
