John Joseph Columbo, 91, of Danville, passed away at 10:48 a.m. Monday, July 09, 2007 at Danville Care Center. John was born on July 8, 1916 in Dillionville, Ohio, the son of John J. and Julia (Cruppinick) Columbo. He married Irene Moody on November 26, 1954 in Urbana. She preceded him in death on September 4, 2006. He is also survived by his two sons- Ricky Varvel and John (Cindy) Columbo both of Danville; two daughters- Susan Kingery and Lisa Columbo both of Danville; one brother- Bill Columbo of Wooster, Ohio; two sisters- Mary Frevert of Munster, Indiana and Betty Pharis of Valparaiso, Indiana; seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two great-grandchildren, three brothers- Joe Willis, George Columbo, and Henry Columbo; and one sister- Helen Smith. John was a graduate of Westville High School. He joined the United States Army and served during WWII. John served with General Pattons 3rd Armor division. He was involved in the Invasion of France and the Battle of the Bulge, where he earned four battle stars and a certificate of merit. John worked at General Motors for 30 years in the skill house, until he retired in 1980. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a lifetime member of the DAV " Danville Chapter 18. He enjoyed gardening and loved caring for his grandchildren and family. A Celebration of the Life of John Joseph Columbo will be at 10:00 Friday, July 13, 2007 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with Bishop Aaron Julian officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 " 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #210.
