John Champion, 88, of Mooresville, Indiana, formerly of Danville, passed away at 4:17 a.m. est. Thursday May 31, 2007 at Morgan County Hospital in Indiana. John was born on July 25, 1918 in Danville, Illinois, the son of Adolph and Maria (Gerard) Champommier. He married Ruth Johnson on August 9, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois. She survives. He is also survived by his one son- Don (Cheryl) Champion of Columbia, Missouri; one daughter- Kay Champion of Camby, Indiana; one brother- Clarence (Delores) Champion of Oakwood, Illinois; one sister-in-law- Marie Champion of Danville, Illinois; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother- Rene Champion, and one sister- Carman Champion. John served in the United States Army during WWII, in France from 1942 to 1945. After the war John became a firefighter for the City of Danville. He was a lieutenant on the fire department from 1946 until he retired in 1977. After retirement, John and Ruth moved to Bradenton, Florida. While living in Florida, John worked at Sears for 10 years. He was a member of the Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Bradenton. After living in Florida for several years, John and Ruth moved to Indiana. John loved to go fishing, golfing, square dancing and to cook. He was famous for his chili and his French waffle cookies. John also loved to spend his time gardening. John was a past-member of the Elks Club #332 in Danville. He was very dedicated to his wife and to his family. A Celebration of the Life of John Champion will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 4, 2007 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, with Pastor James Blue officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 " 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date in Sunset Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Danville Fire Department.
