Joel Kirby

Joel Kirby, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on November 28, 2025, at the age of 71 in his hometown of Urbana, Illinois. Born on December 31, 1953, Joel lived a full life dedicated to his family and friends.

Known for his vibrant personality, Joel had a variety of hobbies and interests that brought him joy. He was an avid golfer, cyclist, reader, and cook. He also loved nature, camping and being outdoors.

Joel dedicated over 40 years to the concrete industry with Shaw Brothers Concrete, earning the respect and admiration from colleagues and clients alike. He went on to become an owner in the business and treated his crew like an extended family.

An inductee into the Urbana High School Hall of Fame, Joel achieved notable success as a high school All-American football player before continuing his academic and athletic journey at Indiana University. He was awarded a full scholarship and was named an All-Academic Big Ten Honoree.

Joel is survived by his loving wife, Susan Kirby, who was his high school sweetheart and partner for 51 wonderful years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Barbara Kirby; his siblings, April Carmien and Patience Anders; his children, Christopher Kirby, Daniel Kirby (Julie), and Claire Kirby (Alberto); his cherished granddaughters Allison and Corbin; and his constant companion Ella the dog.

Joel is preceded in death by his father, Arden, and his brother, Brian, who will be lovingly remembered in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

A Celebration of Life visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center's Champaign Chapel 710 N. Neil St. 61820 in Champaign, Illinois, on Monday December 8, 2025, starting at 3:00 PM and concluding at 5:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to join together in honoring the legacy of a remarkable man whose love and kindness touched many lives.

Joel Kirby will be deeply missed, but his spirit will undoubtedly live on through the countless memories he created and the family and friends he so dearly loved.
