Henning - Joan McConnell, 84, of Edwardsville, Il, passed away at 8:20 p.m. August 3, 2018 with her four daughters at her bedside. Prior to moving to Edwardsville in 2017 to live with her daughter, Joan resided in Danville, IL for 5 years and in Henning, IL for 41 years. Joan Sherwood Price was born on September 15, 1933 in Cornwall, New York, daughter of Dorothy Byrd Price and Harold Stuart Price. She married William R. Hardin in 1953 and they had four daughters. On January 29, 1966, William became a casualty of the Vietnam War. On June 15, 1971, Joan married Theo D. McConnell of Henning, IL. Joan is survived by her daughters: Linda (Hardin) Kirby and husband Gary; Juanita (Hardin) Ward; Patricia (Hardin) Lyon and husband George, and Laura (Hardin) Wittrock and husband Kenneth; Step Children: Helen (McConnell) Shaffer and husband Charles; Jenean (McConnell) Henkelman and husband Tom; and Neil McConnell and wife Patty; Sister: Betsy (Price) Alexander and husband Dean, Brothers: Jeffery Price and Stephen Price and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joan was preceded in death by her husbands William R. Hardin and Theo D. McConnell, her parents, her brother Robert A. Price, and son-in-law Gary L. Ward. In 1951, Joan graduated Covington High School, Covington, IN. Joan attended Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana, and obtained her Bachelor's Degree in history and home economics from American University, Washington, DC. Joan was an active and devoted member of the Bowman Avenue United Methodist Church for many years and was also very active with the United Methodist Women and the Henning Civic Club. Joan served as Village Clerk while living in Henning and served for many years as a Vermilion County Election Judge. Joan devoted her time to helping others and took great joy in her work with Fair Hope Ministries providing services to new mothers in need. Joan's hobbies included sewing, crafting, gardening, bowling, playing cards and traveling. Joan was a dearly loved and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 3940 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Danville, IL. An informal visitation with the family will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
