Jerald E. Shelato, Sr., 77, of Westville, passed away at 6:31pm, Saturday, May 2, 2015, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He was born on August 25, 1937, in Danville, the son of Glenn and Dorothy {Hathaway} Shelato, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Barbara Bridgewater on January 24, 1959, in Georgetown, until her passing in 2003. Those who will miss him include: his children, Jerald (Piper) Shelato Jr. of Mundelein, IL, Glen (Bernita) Shelato of Tilton, & Debbie (Steve) Russian of Danville; his sister, Mary Andrews of Champaign; his grandchildren, Sarah (Dustin) Brown, Morgan (Josh) Giuliani, Dalton Russian, Abigail Shelato, & Joshua Shelato; and his two great grandchildren, Brently Brown & Kenzley Giuliani. He was preceded in death by: his brothers, Brian Shelato & Aden Shug' Serepin, and two sisters, Carol Mahoney & Rita Hoskins. Jerald was a proud Veteran of the US Army. He worked as an operating engineer with Vacketta Construction and belonged to International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841. He was a member and former Deacon of Trinity United Church of Christ. Jerald also had served as Mayor and as a Trustee of the Village of Westville. He was a former Superintendent of Westville-Belgium Sanitary District. He belonged to the Westville American Legion Post #51 and was a 32 Mason. He enjoyed going hunting and mushroom hunting and working in his yard. Jerald especially loved spending time with his family & grandkids. A celebration of Jerald's life will be held at 3:00pm, Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at Sunset-Urbas Funeral Chapel, Westville, with Pastor Robbie Ketcherside officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 12pm-3pm prior to his service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Westville. Memorial donations may be given in his name to American Kidney Foundation.
