Jane Moretto

Captain Jane A. Moretto (ret.), 80, of Mt. Dora, FL, formerly of Westville, passed away on September 2, 2014, at the home of her long-time friend, Celeste Evans, in Mt. Dora, FL. She was born in Westville, IL, the daughter of Bernard and Mildred {Sutton} Moretto, both deceased. Jane attended Schlarman High School, then continued a long and rewarding career by first receiving her Bachelors at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and then her Masters Degree in Nursing Administration from Columbia University, as well as, becoming a Certified Diabetic Foot Specialist. She was Veteran of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned of Officers Corp. She became the Supervisor & Director of Nursing at U.S. Public Health Hospitals in California, Boston, Massachusetts, & Louisiana. She was a pioneer who helped set-up what is now called the LEAP Program, greatly reducing lower extremity amputations. She loved her career and all of the responsibility involved. Jane was known to her family and friends as a person dedicated to helping. She enjoyed going bowling, golfing, & dancing, receiving an award for best Waltz & Tango dancer. She was a world class traveler and visited many places including, Italy (which was a total of 11), Russia, Ireland, Spain, Mexico, & many others. She also remained active in her church, St. Patrick, in Mt. Dora, attending daily. One of her most precious moments, was having an audience with Pope Paul VI. She is survived by: her nephew, Paul Chip (Monica) Moretto; her niece, Angie Chewning; her great-niece, Olivia Ann Moretto; her great nephew, Nathan Chewning; and her sister-in-law, Shirley Moretto. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bernard, and a nephew. A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm, Saturday, September 13, 2014, at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Westville, IL, with Fr. Greg Nelson officiating. Military rites will be conducted. Sunset-Urbas Funeral Home, Westville, assisted the family with arrangements.
