Jan "Joe" Mayer, 81, of Westville passed away on June 1, 2021 at Sacred Heart Medical Hospital in Danville. Joe was born in Iowa City, Iowa the youngest son of Jacob and Emma (Pirchel) Mayer Crawford. Joe later married Roberta Kennedy on October 31, 1964. She survives.
Also surviving Joe is his children: Jeffrey "Alf" Mayer of Spring, TX, Holly (Floyd) Mayer Brewer of Westville, Kem (Tony Sparrow) Mayer Wiggins of Westville and Sam (Richard) Mayer Huff of Danville and eight grandchildren: Bobby Pickerson, Kalipb Wiggins, Karena (Joseph) Compton, Kaitlyn (Steven) Paul-Ward, David (Abigail) Huff, Jon (Sarah) Huff and Mikaela Huff, nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law Shirley (Gene Cummins) Hitt and brother-in-law Charlie (Amy) Kennedy and many, many nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, one older brother Jacob Mayer and one older sister Jacqueline Bidwell.
Joe was a Scout Master for troop 201 in Westville also a Ham operator/ instructor his call sign was KB9GS he also enjoyed being on his CB radio in the eighties as the Wonderful Warlock. As a young man Joe would break horses in Davenport, IA. As a parent Joe enjoyed time spent as a family camping and doing things with his kids and grandkids. Joe was a welder in the Danville area and was known for having a great ability for fixing things and his bad sense of humor. Joe later was known as Grandpa Tootsie Roll giving his grandchildren hands full when they visited him. He and his wife loved holding the Belgium Halloween block parties.
A visitation will be held on Saturday June 5, 2021 at 1-2:30 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 414 S. State Street Westville, Illinois 61883. Graveside will follow the visitation at Scottland, IL Friends Chapel Cemetery.
