James Marshall Waters, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on June 16, 1948, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, Jim was the son of Kendall and Virginia Waters and brother to the late Ken Waters. He lived a life full of love, faith, and dedication. Jim shared 55 years of marriage with his wife, Christine, whom he married on August 14, 1970. Together, they built a wonderful life, raising two children, Adam and Jessica. Their family grew to include Jessica’s husband, Paul, and their sons, Cole and Jack; as well as Adam’s wife, Corrie, and their children: Ezekiel, Ethne, Eydie, Eleora, and Emberly. Jim's legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren. Jim graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in computer science, starting his career as a computer programmer for the university. His journey led him to serve as a business manager in the university's department of chemistry and at Lincoln Christian College, before becoming the VP of Teller Services at Busey Bank in Champaign, Illinois. Jim's work was characterized by integrity and dedication, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues. Jim was a devoted follower of Jesus and an active member of the Vineyard Church in Bloomington, Illinois, where Adam and Corrie serve as pastors. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding everything he did. Jim had varied hobbies and interests: woodworking, golf (well, that one was more of a love-hate), reading (especially history and anything by Tom Clancy), puzzles, games, and puns. One could say he was never bored over a board. His wit and intelligence were matched by his patience and gentleness--and by his love for the Fighting Illini. It was fitting that he departed this life only after they secured a spot in the Sweet Sixteen. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Jim's name to the Vineyard Church Bloomington-Normal (380 Wylie Dr. Suite 650, Normal, IL 61761 or online at www.vineyardbloomington.com. A Celebration of Life will be held at the church, date and time TBA. Jim will be deeply missed, but we take comfort in the fact that he is with the Lord whom he loved. May he rest in peace, embraced by the love of his family and the grace of his Savior.
