Champaign; James Patrick Thompson, 49, of Champaign, passed away at 9:10 am on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer, while showing the most amazing attitude and always thinking of others. Jim was born July 5, 1963 in Urbana, the son of the late Richard and Helen Stone Thompson. He married Pam Seeds in Urbana. She survives. Other survivors include his two stepdaughters, Brittany and Danielle Veign, both of Champaign; his six siblings, David Thompson of Urbana, John (Mary Kay) Thompson of Urbana, Susan (Joel) Kirby of Champaign, Joe (Nancy) Thompson of Urbana, Paul (Elise) Thompson of Nevada City, CA., and Mary (Mark) Tate of Champaign; 11 nephews, 3 nieces, and his former wife, Amy Sprenkle Thompson. Jim had a long and prominent career in the golf world. He was the Golf Professional at Iron Horse Golf Club, assistant golf pro at Urbana Golf Country Club, and currently employed by Green Golf Partners at the U of I Golf Course. He was a prominent teaching professional who introduced and refined golf games of thousands of golfers in the last 25 years. He played on the Parkland College Golf Team in the mid 1980's and coached the Parkland College Golf Team from 2003-2007. He will soon be the first golfer inducted into the Parkland College Hall of Fame this February, 2013. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday Dec. 21, 2012 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church Parish Center , 708 W. Main St. Urbana, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Arrangements are being handled by Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center Champaign- Urbana Chapel.
