State Line, IN – James “Jim” A. Roderick, 90, of State Line, IN passed away at 3:41 AM on Friday, April 18, 2025 at the Waters of Covington. He was born July 9, 1934 in Danville, IL to Alfred “Doc” and Alice (Clapp) Roderick. He married Audrey J. Talbert on January 7, 1960. She survives.
Also surviving are three children, Duane (Nancy) Roderick of Attica, IN, Troy (Rita) Roderick of State Line, IN, and Loretta (Brian) Matherlee of High Point, NC; nine grandchildren, Corey (Allison) Roderick of Denver, CO, Blake (Rachel) Roderick of Denver, CO, Chase (Shannon) Roderick of Lafayette, IN, Dylan (Kirsten) Roderick of Elmira, NY, Nate (Dani) Boyer of Rossville, IL, Abbi (Mike) Madison of Lakewood, CO, Brittany (Marshall) Harris of Rossville, IL, Emily Matherlee of High Point, NC, and Ashley Matherlee of High Point, NC; and 13 great grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Kevin Roderick, a sister, Imogene Lewsader, and his beloved Jack Russell Terrier of 15 years, Chloe.
After High School, Jim proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in business/economics at Indiana University and began his career at Palmer Bank. After the bank, he worked for Hyster and Bohn Aluminum before eventually moving on to become a Chemical Operator at Teepak from where he retired after many years of service.
Jim’s time at college made him a lifelong IU basketball fan. He was a former member of the freemasons and enjoyed mushroom hunting with his sons, fishing, crossword puzzles, and scrabble. A well-loved grandpa and great grandpa, he was always ready for a game, whether it was board games, cards or dice. He also enjoyed weekends with family at Lake Holiday Hideaway in Kingman, and traveling with friends on their bus trips.
Known for his sharp sense of humor and quick wit, he could always bring laughter to the room. Jim was a talented piano player and an equally talented gardener. He spent a lot of time tending to his flower garden and canning vegetables he grew himself in his vegetable garden. After retirement, Jim began attending Second Church of Christ in Danville and through this faith, was baptized in 2010.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jim Roderick will be held at 1 PM EDT on Friday, May 16, 2025 at State Line Christian Church in State Line, IN. Reverend Brian Matherlee will officiate. Burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date at Walnut Corner Cemetery, in Danville, IL. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL 61834 has been entrusted with cremation arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jim’s name may be made to State Line Christian Church, State Line, IN, or the local animal shelter of your choice.
