Danville- James A. Evans, 96, of Danville passed away at 5:43 PM on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the Hawthorne Inn. He was born on October 5, 1916 in Danville to Ernest and Atha Gilliland Evans. He married Melvina Edenburn on September 20, 1947 at Central Christian Church. She preceded him in death on March 16, 1998. Surviving are two sons, David Evans of Danville and James D. (Marie) Evans of Hampton, NJ; a daughter, Janet Listak of Social Circle, GA; one brother, two sisters and a half sister; three grandchildren, Kari (Tommy) Kile, Kalisha (Eric) Gill, and Amanda (Kelly) Gee; and four great grandchildren, Tyler and Emily Kile, Nathan Gill, and Logan Gee. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, and a granddaughter, Kimberly Knutsen. Jim served his country as a First Sergeant in the US Army during WWII. He was stationed in Guam and was a Bronze Star recipient. Following his military service, he worked as a baker at the Grab It Here Bakery for over 20 years and later worked at Barkman Chevrolet. Jim became a member of the Masonic Olive Branch Lodge in 1950, remaining a life member for 62 years. He was heavily involved with the Shriners and was also a member of the Danville Consistory and the Eastern Star. Jim also loved his church, Ridgeview Baptist, at which he had been a member for many years. A service to celebrate the life of James Evans will be held at 10 AM on Monday, October 22, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 2-5 PM on Sunday, October 21, also at Sunset in Danville with Masonic Rites taking place at 1:30 PM, prior to the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital.
