He was then united in marriage to Wanda Alice Hutchcraft in 1972 and with her three children, brought two families together as one. They were married for 44 years when she preceded him in death in 2017.

He graduated from Deedsville High School, class of 1948 and he participated in school sports, including basketball and baseball.

He enlisted in the US Air Force during the Korean War in 1951 and served as a Staff Sergeant. In 1952 he was stationed in Casablanca Morocco for a year and a half and during this time, his wife (Lolita Joyce Burgard Long) joined him there just prior to the birth of their first son. Jim was a longstanding avid Chicago Cubs fan and an Indiana Hoosiers Basketball fan. He loved to keep an immaculate yard and in his younger days, enjoyed getting out into his woodworking workshop, mushroom hunting, fishing and playing a good game of golf. He loved his family very much and was a devoted father to all of his children. Everyone that met him loved his kind gentle personality and he will surely be missed by all.
