Danville- James Franklin Black, Sr., 77 of Danville passed away at 11:50 AM on November 13, 2013 at the VA Illiana Health Care Systems in Danville, IL. James was born on October 5, 1936 in Herrick, IL, the son of William and Alma (Weaver) Black. He married Peggy Scipio on November 27, 1988 in Taylorville at the Church of Latter Day Saints. Jim is survived by his wife, Peggy Black; four sons, Robert, Timothy, James, Jr., and Glenn Black; one daughter, Melissa Black Hall; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and one sister, Marilyn (Black) Malmberg. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother. Jim retired from the US Navy with 22 years service. He retired with the rank E-7, Chief and his active duty included 9 tours in Vietnam. Jim received the Purple Heart for being injured on active duty and also received the Silver Cross for his great leadership during an attack on his ship. His hobbies included scratch-building and flying Radio-Controlled Airplanes. He was a member of the Vermillion County RC Club. He also enjoyed working on anything mechanical. He built and raced stock cars at the Assumption Raceway, Assumption, IL. He enjoyed riding his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle, especially on vacations. A visitation for James Black will be held from 10 AM -12 PM on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Burial and graveside services will follow at 1 PM at Danville National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #210.
