James David Woods

Cayuga, Ind. - James David Woods, 89, of rural Cayuga, passed away at 7:35 a.m. CDT Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at North Logan Healthcare Center in Danville, Illinois. James was born on August 8, 1925 in Parke County, Indiana the son of the late Arthur and Mary Peer Woods Brock. He married Mary Martha Barrett on September 13, 1947 in Vermilion Grove, Illinois. She survives. Other survivors include his children, David Woods of Bismarck, Arkansas; Michellee(Dan Thompson)Woods of Cayuga, Indiana; Stephen Woods of Cayuga, Indiana and Shelley(David)Pabst of St. Paul, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Micah; Kara; Caine; Cheryle and Storm; several great grandchildren and one brother, Richard Brock of Texas. James was preceded in death by three grandsons, Sean; Dusty and Lee; three sisters and two brothers. James retired from Bohn Aluminum as an Union Representative/Machinist. He also was a farmer. James formerly worked at General Motors and Harrison Steel. He was a veteran of W.W. II serving in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, James attained the rank of Machinist Mate 2/C with the Seabee's. Awards that James received were the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal and the American Area Campaign Medal. He was a member of the Cayuga American Legion Post #263. James enjoyed mushrooming, producing maple syrup, hunting, fishing, tinkering with motors and watching NASCAR. More than anything, James loved life. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. EDT at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana. Military rites will be accorded by the Cayuga American Legion Post #263 at 11:15 a.m. EDT at the funeral home. Following visitation there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Cayuga American Legion starting at Noon EDT for a luncheon. Contributions may be made to the Parke/Vermillion County Humane Society, 1884 South State Road 63, Hillsdale, Indiana 47854.
