James "Jamie" Scott Cummins

1967-2024

James Scott Cummins of Lafayette, Indiana, a beloved son, brother, father and most importantly, grandfather, passed very unexpectedly from this Earth on July 9, 2024, from unbeknownst health issues.

Jamie was born August 18th, 1967 in Danville, IL to James Cummins and Lanette (Cook) Cummins. Jamie thought the world of both of his parents. He was known as the biggest mamas boy and gained his love for working on cars while helping his father from a young age. He was the oldest brother to Amy Harper and William "Bill" Cummins and brother to Tina Wood Schultz, Michelle Webb, and Erica Cummins. Jamie often talked about working on the farm as a child, making memories with his siblings, and spending time with those he loved. Family and friends were always a priority in his life. Jamie had a strong bond with many of his childhood friends that lasted throughout his lifetime. He valued all of those friendships and thought of them each as family. Jamie was a 1985 graduate of North Vermillion High School. After high school, he began his career as a mechanic, which continued to be his true calling and passion throughout his entire life.

Jamie was the proud father of three daughters: Tabatha, Erica, and Courtney. Tabatha was his firstborn whom he loved dearly. She and her daughter preceded him in death in 2010. He loved and missed them both very much and often said they were his guardian angels. Erica was his second born and in true middle child fashion, was his spitfire. Jamie enjoyed his first ever flight to travel to see Erica, her husband Darrin, and their children. He recently made his first trip to Disney with them and had an amazing time. If you saw the pictures, his face and smile said it all. Jamie was very grateful for Darrin and his support of Erica and the kids; he knew they were all being taken care of even when he was so far away. He enjoyed their video calls and looked forward to talking with Erica and her kids as often as possible. Courtney was his youngest daughter and his "babydoll". They both looked forward to their daily morning phone calls with each other. Jamie, Courtney, her husband Gabe, and their children were always up for spontaneous adventures. Multiple times a week you would have found them together. The simple trips out for breakfast, grocery shopping, bowling, getting their favorite coffee, Goodwill shopping trips, or just talking and listening to music together are some of their most cherished memories. Jamie never had a son of his own but had known Gabe since he was a child; he often spoke about how much he respected Gabe for his perseverance, work ethic, and dedication to his family.

Jamies favorite role was that of a grandparent. He loved "them babies". He treasured his time with his grandkids and loved being their "Grandpa" or "Papaw", never failing to support them in every way he possibly could. He enjoyed creating new memories, trying new things, and continuing traditions with his grandchildren. There werent much those kids couldnt talk him into. He always showed up, often being the first to arrive and the last to leave every celebration or party. He loved seeing the looks on his grandchildrens faces as he watched them open a birthday gift, Christmas present, or a "just because" surprise. He would brag about his grandchildren to anyone that would listen, and everyone knew they were his pride and joy.

Jamie was an avid lover of music, Dale Earnhart, working on cars, and anything Chevrolet. He looked forward to going to concerts and listening to ridiculously loud music, the louder the better in his opinion. From rock & roll to rap to country, there wasnt a genre he didnt love. He cherished his Dale Earnhart and Chevrolet memorabilia and proudly used it to decorate every house he called home. Anyone and everyone knew Jamie was the best mechanic around. It might have inflated his ego a bit because he wasnt very humble about that fact, but rightfully so! He was truly very talented and could easily diagnose and repair any mechanical issue, sometimes all you needed to do was describe the problem and he had your solution. Some of his best times were spent with friends, working on cars, and listening to loud music.

Jamie will always be remembered for his sense of humor, big heart, and the way he was always there for anyone who needed him. We couldnt have asked for a better father or grandfather, and will miss our Dad every day. We hope and pray he knows how proud of him we are; he was a true example of overcoming obstacles and always making the best of a situation. We find peace in knowing his memory will live on forever in the hearts of everyone who loved him.
