James Bean, 77, of Perrysville, IN, passed away at his home at 1:02am, Wednesday, June 21, 2023. He was born in Danville, IL, on August 20, 1945, the son of John and Dorene {Wakeland} Bean, both preceded him in death. James is survived by his brother, Richard (Lynn) Bean; his sister, Diana Lynn (Steve) Rumple; his nephews, John (Melanie) Bean, Scott (Amy) Bean, Brett (Stephanie) Bean, Sean (Evan) Rumple, and Chase (Danielle) Rumple; and many friends including his great friends, Steve Huck Byers and Tom Kendrick. The family would also like to thank the VNA/Hospice of the Wabash Valley for their care for James and support for his family. James served his country with dignity and honor during the Vietnam War having received two Bronze Stars during the conflict for heroism in action. The award noted he was serving as rifleman at a listening post 75 meters outside of his units defensive position along highway 13. Late at night, the listening post received intensive small arms, automatic weapons and machine gun fire from a numerically superior Viet Cong force. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he exposed himself to hostile fire as he maneuvered to an advantageous position from which to fire on the insurgents. On several occasions, he exposed himself to heavy barrages of small arms and automatic weapons fire as he moved to other positions to help his comrades. His courage and determination under fire helped to route the insurgents. The record states this was an outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery that is in keeping with the finest tradition of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the first infantry division and the United States Army. We honor you for your service to our country. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00am (CST), Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Danville National Cemetery, 1900 E Main St, Danville, IL 61832 with Military Rites conducted. His family entrusted his arrangements to Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, DeVerter Chapel, 215 N. Division Street, Cayuga, IN 47928. Memorial donations may be given to the Parke/Vermillion Humane Society or VNA Hospice of the Wabash Valley. Please join his family in sharing memories through his Tribute Wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
