Jacob Harold Lape 1928–2026 

Jacob (Jake) Harold Lape, 98, of Covington, IN, passed away peacefully at Wellbrooke of Crawfordsville on September 26, 2026. He was born at home in Foster, IN, in 1928 to Jerome and Thelma Lape.

 Jake graduated from Covington High School in 1946. Before being drafted into the Army, he married his wife, Patricia A. Lape (1926–2020), in 1948. They were married for over 71 years. After his time in the Army, Jake worked at Olin’s in Covington while pursuing his true passion: farming. Jake was able to spend most of his life living his dream, working alongside his two sons, David and Alan Lape, and grandson Duncan Lape on the family’s crop production operation, while his wife kept up the household and tedious farm paperwork.

 Just a few of Jake’s enjoyments throughout life included being a member of the Wabash Valley Steam & Gas Club, restoring antique tractors, being a regular at the Beef House for many years, driving his boys, Alan and Dave, across the country to compete in garden tractor pulling in the early years, mowing yards and roadsides all summer long, hosting early-morning coffee with friends daily, and always making sure he was the one who planted the sweet corn patches every season.

 Jake enjoyed the company of his traveling companion and furry friend, Peppy. They traveled many miles together, checking on everyone working in the fields during the fall and spring seasons. Jake attended Benson Chapel Church with his wife, Patricia, for many years, as well as United Methodist Church in Covington, IN.

 Jake was an early riser who believed in getting up, getting to work, and making the most of every day. He found purpose in a long day’s work and truly valued those who did the same.

 Jake will be remembered by everyone who knew him as a devoted husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, and, not to mention, a farmer through and through.

 Jake was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia A. Lape; brother, Dale (Liz) E. Lape; and son, David J. Lape. He is survived by his son, Alan J. Lape, and grandson, Duncan (Morgan) J. Lape.

A Celebration of Jake's Life will be held at 10 am on Saturday October 3, 2026, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center's Covington Chapel 420 3rd street Covington, Indiana. Burial to follow at Lower Mound Cemetery with Military honors at the Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday October 2, 2026, 4-7 at the funeral home.
