Irene R. Spicer

Danville – Irene R. Spicer, 89, of Danville passed away at home at 2:29 AM on Sunday, June 8, 2025. She was born June 8, 1936 in Danville to Lawrence and Mammie (Christensen) Kagels. She married Otto H. Spicer on May 10, 1959 in Danville. He preceded her in death on January 6, 2015.

She is survived by two children, Scott (Angela) Spicer of Cobden, IL and Crystal (Jesse) Simmons of Danville; a grandson, Zack Simmons; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Sue Spicer, and five brothers, Larry, Donnie, Robert, Jerry, and Clifford Kagels.

While her kids were growing up, Irene worked as a homemaker and took pride in caring for and supporting her family. She was a member of the health and lifestyle club TOPS Illinois #315 for over 40 years and belonged to the Grape Creek Baptist Church. She would spend her free time sewing, cooking, and baking cookies and especially enjoyed playing board and card games. Irene also liked watching golf and was a fan of Illini basketball and the St. Louis Cardinals. Most of all, she cherished the time spent with her family, especially her grandson, Zack.

Irene’s family would also like to extend a special thank you to Marj and the Carle Hospice Team for their compassionate and heartfelt care.

A service to celebrate the life of Irene Spicer will be held at 12 PM on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL 61834. Pastor Chuck Strebin will officiate. Burial will take place at Danville National Cemetery at a later time. Visitation will be held from 10 AM – 12 PM on Thursday prior to the service, also at Sunset in Danville. Memorials in her name may be made to Grape Creek Baptist Church.
