Hershel Nickle Jr., 84, of Westville, passed away at 8:34am, Monday, December 31, 2012, at his home. He was born on November 14, 1928, in Danville, the son of Hershel Nickle Sr. and Ethel Woods. Hershel married Mildred Hillard on August 28, 1948, in Covington, IN. She will miss him dearly along with his children, Wayne (Nancy) Nickle of Georgetown, David (Lisa) Nickle of Grape Creek, Thomas Nickle of Morey Chapel Lane, Carol (Bruce) Anderson of Westville, and Lisa (Joe) Stewart of Chrisman; his daughter-in-law, Tammy Nickle of Covington; one brother Basil Nickle of Danville; two sisters, Louis (Bill) Estes of Peru, IN, & JoAnne (Paul) Walters of Columbus, OH; twelve grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his parents; his infant daughter, Elizabeth; one son, Leslie; and a sister, Betty Edwards. Hershel was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1945 to 1947. He retired from the L&N and CSX Railroad after 42 years of service. Hershel was a member of Grape Creek Baptist Church, the Westville Sportsman Club, and the Frontier Twirlers, as well as, the Merry Riders Saddle Club. Hershel enjoyed building model airplanes and flying them, along with go-carts. He had a passion for raising mules and showing horses and in his younger days, barrel racing. He also loved to fish, go camping and boating. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and grandkids. A celebration of life funeral service for Hershel will be at 1:00 pm Thursday January 3, 2013 at Sunset-Urbas Chapel of Westville with Pastor David Leary officiating. Visitation for family and friends will 11:00 am to the time of service at the funeral home on Thursday. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery in Danville with Military rites by the Westville American Legion Post# 51. Memorial donations can be given to the American Cancer Society.
