Herman “John” Boen, Jr, 95, of Oakwood, IL passed away on June 19, 2026 at Hawthorne Inn in Danville, IL.
John was born on November 15, 1930 the son of Herman and Bertha (Sims) Boen, Sr in Hillery, IL. He married Claudine R. Swinford on June 18, 1955 in Sidell, IL and she preceded him in death on May 28, 2021.
Survivors include his son, Jim (Cindy) Boen; grandchildren, Brandi (Curtis) Owens, Ty (Lacey) Boen and great-grandchildren, Dakotta, Brylea, Darbiee, Kelby and Pyper as well as one sister, Barbara Wolfe of Newburgh, IN and sister-in-law, Marilyn Boen of Oakwood, IL.
John is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Claudine Boen, and one brother, Bill Boen.
John served in the United States Navy and was retired from General Motors where he worked as a Clerk in the Finishing Department. He was an avid automobile enthusiast and enjoyed spending his free time playing cards, golfing, watching a variety of sports and loved spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to Stacie Ripple for her wonderful care of John and to the staff at Hawthorne Inn.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center Oakwood Chapel in Oakwood, Illinois, 105 East South Main Street, Oakwood, Illinois 61858 with John Swinford officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park with Military Rites accorded by American Legion Post 210 Honor Guard. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at the funeral home in Oakwood, IL.
Memorial may be made in John’s memory to the Illiana Veterans Affairs Medical Center Veterans Activities Fund.
