Herbert Wayne Montel, 86, of Danville, passed away at 8:35 a.m., Thursday, July 28, 2005 at Veterans Affairs Illiana Healthcare Systems Hospital in Danville. Herbert was born on May 9, 1919 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, the son of Clarence Dewayne and Nellie (Locke) Montel. He married Helen Cline. She preceded him in death on December 25, 1976. He is survived by one son- Monte Montel of Danville; two grandsons- Michael and Matthew Montel both of Danville; 4 great-grandchildren; one half-sister- Marcella Lenora England Buss of Jersey City, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Herbert graduated from Oakwood High School. After graduating he joined the Army. He served in the U.S. Army as Chief Warrant Officer during WWII from 1942 to 1945 serving in the European Theatre Operations. During his time in the service he served in England, Wales, Scotland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Holland, and Belgium. Herbert worked at the V.A., Sugar Creek Creamery, Consolidated Products, Bohn Aluminum, and worked at the Post Office for 20 years until he retired. He was a member of American Legion Post #210 and the Retired Officers Association. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Danville. Herbert took great pride in the flower garden at the church. He planted it and took care of it for many years. He was the founder and first president of the Kickapoo Rose Society. A celebration of the life of Herbert Wayne Montel will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2005 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, with Rev. John Cummins officiating. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park. Military rites will be performed by the American Legion Post #210 at the cemetery.
