Danville- Herbert H. Harper, a Danville native and husband of Betty Harper, passed away on January 10, 2013, at the age of 92. Herb, son of Raymond and Nelle Wurtsbaugh Harper, was born November 9, 1920, in Danville. He married Juanita (Betty) True on May 30, 1941, and they celebrated their 71st anniversary in May, 2012. Betty then passed away June 29, 2012. Survivors include a sister Katie Balsley of Danville; two sons, Doug (Cheri) Harper of Greer, SC, and Mark (Beckie) Harper of Danville; three grandchildren, Adam Harper of Urbana, Hilary (Chris) Rikard of Greer, SC, and Ben (Miranda) Harper of Greenville, SC; and six great grandchildren. Besides his parents Herb was predeceased by a brother, Doug Harper, a sister, Helen (Harper) Klayer, a granddaughter Kristi (Harper) Kempf and just recently a brother-in-law Ron Balsley. A graduate of Danville High School Herb was a World War II veteran attached to General Patton's Third Army in Europe. He continued over the years to stay in touch with his "Army buddies" and shed tears too often recently over the losses of many. He was one of the "Greatest Generation" and was quietly proud of having served his country during wartime. Herb was a member of Central Christian Church, American Legion Post #210, United Commercial Travelers #272, and Teamsters Local #26. He retired as Credit Manager from Rhodes-Burford Furniture Store in 1992 after thirty years of employment. Among Herb's hobbies were reading of all kinds and internet surfing. He was always there to support his family in their various needs and endeavors with a smile on his face. He was often behind the scenes in serving various organizations. He accompanied his sons on Boy Scout hikes and coached their Little League baseball teams. Most importantly Herb unfailingly displayed his love for his wife Betty in her years of suffering with Alzheimer's. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 17 at 2pm at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Pastor Hank Anderson of Central Christian Church will preside. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1pm. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Central Christian Church or the Danville District #118 Community Foundation.
