Helen Marie Davis

Helen Marie Davis, 84, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 28, 2015. She was born in Tuscola, Illinois, on February 18, 1931, to James and Cora Kennedy. She was the “feisty little sister” to Lowell (Marilyn) Kennedy & Raymond (Betty) Kennedy. She graduated from Tuscola High School in 1949 then attended nurses training at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1953. It was during nurses training that she met her “knight in shining armor”, Donald Davis, whom she married on December 12, 1952. They were a team, working hard all of their lives and taking pride in their accomplishments and their little place in the country on Yankee Branch Road. They had 52 wonderful years together, usually tackling some project - raising some cows, mowing the yard, helping a neighbor roof their house or cut up firewood, and always keeping busy. Anyone that knew Mom knew she was passionate about nursing. Neighbors called on her in times of need, for mashed finger, a quick blood pressure check, or just an opinion about a doctor; and Lord help the driver of the snowplow that better clear the road before time to leave for work! That passion saw her through retirement from St. Elizabeth Hospital, then onto the Surgery Center of Danville, where she worked part time until March 2013. Along the way, she had a family, Donna (Tom) Oaks of Georgetown & Denise Ellis of Kingman, Indiana. The family grew with the addition of three grandsons: Jason (Melanie) McCool, Tom McCool, & Joshua (Kristen) McCool, along with one granddaughter, Casey Ellis (Guy Spencer). A few more chairs were added to the table with the addition of four great grandchildren. Preceding Mom in death were her brother, Lowell, & husband, Don, who passed on April 11, 2004. Besides a 60 year career in nursing, Mom also enjoyed cooking, hunting mushrooms, mowing, and square dancing with the Kadiddlehoppers Club of Georgetown. In later years, she could be found playing slot machines on occasion at the Legion or Paradice Casino, which also became a passion. Mom was a member of the Georgetown Fair Association & served as a Love Township official for 10 years. I think its fair to say you usually didnt have to wonder what she was thinking because she called it like she saw it. But she cared about people & valued the many friendships she had throughout the years. A Celebration of Helens life will be held at 3:00pm, Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at Sunsets Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home, Georgetown. Visitation will be held from 12:00pm to 3:00pm prior to her service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be private at Crown Hill Cemetery, Ridge Farm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Helens name to Georgetown Fair Association.
