Helen L. Sowers

Newport, Ind. - Helen L. Sowers, 70, of Newport, passed away at 6:02 p.m. EST Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at her daughter's residence in St. Bernice, Indiana.

She was born October 31, 1949 in Clinton, Indiana the daughter of the late Herman and Dora (Boots) Bailey.

Helen married Clifford D. Sowers on February 18, 1967 in Newport, Indiana. He preceded her in death on December 25, 2012.

Survivors include her children: Kim (Tony) Bennett of Eugene, Indiana; Kandice (Brock) Fortner of St. Bernice, Indiana and Keith (Shay) Sowers of Newport, Indiana; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three sisters: Lib Swisher and Barb Emery both of Cayuga, Indiana, and Rose (Danny) Davis of West Lebanon, Indiana, and one brother: David Bailey of Newport, Indiana.

Helen was preceded in death by her granddaughter: Victoria 'Tori' See Hathaway.

Helen was a former Vermillion Township Trustee, Newport Water Clerk and cook for the Newport Elementary School and North Vermillion Elementary School. She enjoyed reading, loved watching Criminal Minds and spending time with her family.

Graveside services and burial: 11 a.m. EST Friday, November 15, 2019 at Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Indiana; Officiating: Pastor Garry Jones. There will be no visitation. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana is assisting the family with arrangements.
