Helen Louise Schendel, 78, of Danville passed away on December 21, 2017 at her home. She was born on February 22, 1939 in Lincoln, Nebraska the daughter of Rev. Carl (Philippine Szegedin) Hellmann. Helen married William Arthur "Bill" Schendel on December 17, 1960 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Danville. He preceded her in death on December 15, 1976. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont, Nebraska on March 1, 1939 and confirmed on March 29, 1953 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Arlington, Nebraska. Helen will be deeply missed by her children; Janis (Scott Taylor) Gilbreath of Indianapolis, IN, Scott W. (Sheila Young) Schendel of Champaign, IL, Stephen J. "Striker" (Beth) Schendel of Lombard, IL and Jeffery C. Schendel of Fort Myers, FL. Also surviving are her grandchildren; Robert William (Bobby) Gilbreath of Indianapolis, IN, Tayler Bryanne (Will Towell) Schendel, Madyson Noelle Schendel both of Danville, IL, Grace Elizabeth, Emma Katherine, Jack David and Hank Stephen Schendel all of Lombard, IL, Aiden and Arianna Schendel both of Fort Myers, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Helen graduated from St. Paul Lutheran Grade School in 1953 and Arlington High School in Nebraska in 1957. She went on to get her teaching degree from St. John's College in Winfield, Kansas in 1959. Helen taught at Trinity and Immanuel Lutheran Schools while also being the secretary at Immanuel Lutheran Church from 1976-1984. She became the executive secretary to the Director of Sales at CIGNA Healthplan in Tampa, FL from 1985-1989. She was a member of Executive Women International and volunteered at the American Red Cross. Helen served as past-president and treasurer of Immanuel Women's Guild and past president of the Parent Teacher League. She was a handbell and choir member and Director of Stewardship at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Helen also served as president of the Danville Association of Educational Professionals and was secretary for District #118 for 13 years. Helen was a devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and in her spare time she enjoyed sports, reading, listening to music and especially spending time with her children and grandchildren. A celebration of Helen's life will be held on Thursday, December 28,2017 at 11 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Danville with Pastor Michael Heidle officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 from 4-7 PM at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 3940 North Vermilion St. Danville, IL 61834. Memorials can be made in her name to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Children's Dyslexia Center of East Central Illinois.
