Helen Jo Thomas

Champaign - Helen Jo Thomas passed away on Thursday June 1, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL. She was born on January 28, 1932 in Terre Haute, IN. She is one of 12 children from the union of the late Joseph and Maggie Rapier. Helen finished her schooling in Terre Haute and later relocated to Danville, IL. She is survived by 10 children; Richard, Fredrick, Hal, Rosita, Olive, Barbara, Robert, Margaret, Joe, and Billie Jo. She's also the proud grandmother of 36 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Helen was a member of Carter Metropolitan C.M.E. Church in Danville from the time she relocated to Danville until 2013 when she changed her membership to St. Luke C.M.E. Church in Champaign, IL where she was a faithful member. Helen worked a variety of jobs and finally retired from TeePak, Inc. in Danville, IL. Helen loved spending time with her family, visiting and helping the elderly, working puzzles, listening to music, and being social. Helen said Jesus was her favorite Bible character because "He is my everything." Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. A celebration of Helen's life will be held on Monday June 5, 2017 at 3pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 710 N. Neil St. Champaign, IL 61820. Visitation will be held prior from 1pm-3pm at the funeral home. Cremation will follow. Memorial donations may be made in Helen's name to the American Heart Association.
