Belgium, Ill. -- Helen Drusilla Spencer, 96, of Belgium since August 2000 and formerly of Cayuga, Indiana passed away at 9:10 p.m. CST Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at the home of her son Billie Spencer. She was born July 24, 1914 in Hymera, Indiana, the daughter of the late George and Melissa Glenn Loving Hughes. She married Earl Spencer on August 18, 1933 in Covington, Indiana. He preceded her in death on February 16, 1987. Survivors include: two daughters, Lanore(Dale)Morgan of Dana, Indiana and Wanda Seripinas of Westville, Illinois; two sons, Billie(Sarah)Spencer of Westville, Illinois and Norman Spencer of Sultan, Washington; several grandchildren; great grandchildren and great great grandchildren ; four sisters, Ladonna Switzer of Cayuga, Indiana; Norah Lee Naylor of Cayuga, Indiana; Loretta Canaday of Union, Missouri and Izetta Barker of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two brothers, Kenneth Hughes of Cayuga, Indiana and Joseph Hughes of Zellwood, Florida. She was preceded in death by two grandsons; one sister and two brothers. Helen worked four years as secretary at the former Cayuga High School. She also taught ten years as a elementary school teacher at Cayuga; four years at Alamo; one year at New Market; four years at Kingman and was matron for three years for the Vanderburgh Childrens Home in Evansville, Indiana, retiring in 1975. She was a charter member of the Cayuga Church of the Nazarene and the Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Vermillion County and Indiana State Teachers Association. Helen was a 1933 graduate of Cayuga High School. She received her B/S and Master degrees from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. There will be no services. Per Helen's request and to help further medical science, bequeathal was made to the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. Contributions may be made to the Cayuga Church of the Nazarene, Cayuga, Indiana 47928. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana in charge of arrangements.
