Helen Cornwell

Helen Cornwell, 94, of Georgetown, passed away at 5:49am, Thursday, February 28, 2019, at North Logan Health Care, Danville. She was born on September 18, 1924, in Catlin, IL, the daughter of Frank and Lucy {Chop} Kovack. She was united in marriage to Homer "Junie" Cornwell on May 10, 1947, in Georgetown, until his passing on November 21, 2009.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Galyen of Georgetown; her son, Gregory (Lynn) Cornwell of Naperville; her brother, Robert (Ruby Ann) Kovack; her grandchildren, Derek (JoAnne) Galyen, Kurtis Galyen, Justin (April) Cornwell, Adam Cornwell, & Aaron Cornwell; her great grandchildren, Jasmine, Grayson, Vivian, & Everett. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Frank & Joseph Kovack.

Helen graduated from Georgetown High. She worked for over 20 years at the Vermilion County Court House in the Circuit Clerks Office and the County Clerks Office. She became Vermilion County Auditor in 1976 and served for 12 years. One of the highlights of her political career was attending the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, Georgia in 1988 as a representative of Illinois. She was part of the Vermilion County Democrats, a member of BMPW, and had served on the Georgetown Township Board, as well as the Vermilion County Housing Board. She was a member of St. Isaac Jogues Church in Georgetown and the Alter & Rosary Society. She was an active member of the community and will be dearly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am, Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 109 W 7th St, Georgetown, with Father Timothy Saupp officiating. Visitation will be 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Monday, March 4, 2019, at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Georgetown, at 200 E West ST, with a Rosary Service at 3:30pm. She will be laid to rest in Georgetown Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given in her name to donors choice of charity.
