Hazel Deeken, 85, of Danville, passed away at 3:50 a.m. Monday, October 3, 2011 at her home. Hazel was born on August 19, 1926, in Danville, the daughter of Forrest and Jewel (Vick) Robertson. She married Carl Deeken on October 22, 1944 in Dearborn, Michigan. He preceded her in death on August 29, 2002. She is survived by a son- Larry Carl (Linda) Deeken of Summerfield, Florida; daughter- Toni Sue (Larry) Lawson of Danville; four grandchildren- Shane Michael Lawson of Danville, Jason Scott Deeken of Lemoore, California, Jennifer Suzanne (Michael) Fulford of Lawrenceville, Georgia and Joshua Barrett Arment of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and four great-grandchildren- Her precious little boy, Noah Michael Deeken of Lemoore, California, her sweet little angel, Mackenzie Christine, adorable Emerson Jane Fulford, and the newest addition, Conner Michael all of Lawrenceville, Georgia. They all affectionately knew her as "NANA". She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and beloved sister- Marie Edwards. Hazel graduated from Danville High School in 1944 and was a lifelong resident of Danville. Hazel worked at the Glove Factory, Allith Prouty, Sin Corp., Parisian, Sears, Greenwood Cemetery and Sunset Funeral Home, as a bookkeeper. She also worked for her long time friend, Dorothy Jarling at The Custard Cup. Hazel attended Bowman Avenue Methodist Church as a child and young adult. She taught Sunday school for many years. Later she joined Central Christian Church where she has been a member for over 50 years. At Central she worked in the nursery due to her love of babies and was very active member until her health failed. Hazel was an avid golfer and swimmer. She loved to be outdoors enjoying yard work and gardening. Each spring she would say "I gotta dig in the dirt". She also loved books and magazines. The joy of her life was her family, immediate and extended. Her children, grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, who she loved like her own and they dearly loved her. This is the definition of Hazel according to the Urban Dictionary, it fits her perfectly. 1. Someone who is an amazing mother. 2. Someone who is beautiful on the inside and out. 3. Someone who laughs at everything. 4. Someone who is supportive and inspiring. 5. Someone who is creative and artistic. 6. Someone who is the best friend. 7. Someone who is fun to be around. 8. Someone who is simply the best person anyone could ever have the privilege of knowing. A Celebration of the life of Hazel Deeken will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Central Christian Church in Danville, with Pastor Hank and Deann Anderson officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Thursday at the church. She will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, a Life Celebration Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made in Hazel's name to the Central Christian Church.
