Harry A. Bennett

Harry Arthur Bennett, 95 of Westville, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 5:10 AM at Presence USMC in Danville. He was born February 22, 1921 in Tilton, the son of P. Jewell and Effie (Swank) Bennett. He married Josephine Auskalnis on December 25, 1941 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Westville. She preceded him in death on September 1, 1997. Harry is survived by his children, Toni Walton of Westville and Sue (Paul) Popadines of Oakwood; grandchildren, Sheri aka Grandpa's Buddy Whaley of Catlin, Teri (Don) Hague of Waco, TX, and Wendy Bell of Veedersburg, IN; 9 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Don (Dorothy) Bennett of Tilton; and his special friend, Mary Dudley of Danville. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, grandson, Lindsey Keith Downing, brother, Fred Bennett, and sister, Hazel Dunsmore. Harry worked at Chuckles for 32 years as a maintenance mechanic. He also proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII. Harry was in Company H Infantry 123. He fought in New Guinea and the Philippines and went into Japan after the bombs were dropped. He was a member of the Westville American Legion Post #51. Harry enjoyed woodworking, camping, and mushroom hunting. In their early years Harry and his wife did square dancing together and made many wonderful memories doing so. Harry also liked to be in his garden and tending to it. He was a great card player and loved playing cards with his friends. Most of all Harry loved his family and they will all miss him very much. A Celebration of Harry's Life will be Monday, April 25, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Sunset-Urbas Funeral Chapel, Westville. Pastor Patti Wise will officiate. He will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park. Military honors will be performed by the Westville American Legion Post #51. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from 1-3 PM at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Harry's name to the Westville American Legion Post #51.
