Harold "Swede" Hyland, 92, passed away at 5:45am on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at his home in Westville with family at his side. Swede was born on January 20, 1920 in Danville to Frank and Iva (Gray) Hyland. In November of 1968 he married Dorothy Slazas. She survives. Prior to that he was married to Helen Livingston Hyland, she also survives him. Other surviving family: three daughters and one son: Diana Doan of Danville, Denise (Butch Schroeder) Kegeris of Danville; Debbie (Scott) Fulmer of Indiana, and Todd Hyland of Danville. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Dustin (Bethany) Kegeris of California; Jeremy (Melissa Stitt) Gaskill of Indiana; Brittany Gaskill of Indiana; Brock Hyland of Danville; Michelle Doan, Marsha Musson, Marianne Doan, Jack Doan, all of Danville, and Jamie (Derek) Van Mennen of St. Joseph, several great-grandchildren and his sister, Ruth Wright. Special family friends that survive and will miss Swede are Joe, Connie, and Steve Norbut of Tennessee; Larry and Dawn Fulmer of Indiana, and Butch and Helen Hansbrough of Westville. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Henry, Frank, Jim, and his son, Terry. He attended Douglas School and is a 1938 graduate of Danville High School. He enlisted into the Army Air Corp in 1942-1945. After the service he was a teacher at Utterback Business College in Danville in the 1940's. He is a retiree of the former Danville VA Hospital and was self employed as an accountant and tax preparer for 60 years. Swede was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan and followed the Illinois teams. He enjoyed travelling especially the many family trips he made. He was a life member of the DAV and a member of the Westville American Legion. A Celebration of the Life of Harold "Swede" Hyland is scheduled for 10:00am on Monday, June 25, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville with burial and military honors to follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Miles Clark has been asked to officiate the service. Visitation for family and friends will be from 1-5pm on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the funeral home.
